Propane cylinders are designed to take up very little space and can be kept inside the storage area or in an outdoor facility. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, although, it still does needs operator training in order to be performed safely and also need knowledge of safety standards like the OSHA or Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
Internal combustion lift trucks are easier and faster to refuel, than electric trucks, but the internal combustion or IC engines produce major air-polluting emissions and are extremely noisy.
NARROW-AISLE LIFT TRUCKS
The Class 2 lift trucks includes many varieties of forklift which are specifically made to be used in narrow aisles. The standard storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily enables a counterbalanced lift truck to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Usually, the very narrow aisles are roughly 5.5 to 6 feet wide, whereas narrow aisles are 8 feet wide. These narrow aisles require specialized lift trucks which can put away loads that are small enough to turn on a tight radius or without any turning at all.
The three most common narrow aisle forklifts are the reach trucks, turret trucks and order pickers. The differences among these forklifts are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Forklifts
The original narrow-aisle forklift is considered to be the conventional reach truck. These machinery do not require a huge counterweight and are thus, small enough to turn in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms that extend in front of the forklifts. Then again, these outrigger arms could prevent the lift trucks from getting close enough to the storage rack to retrieve and deposit loads, depending on the storage configuration. In order to overcome this situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is actually a reach truck that is made with a telescoping mechanism. This allows forks to easily and concisely reach into storage locations.
The ideal environment for a narrow-aisle forklift is a place that has good lighting, is clean, and has good traffic flow, well-maintained floors, as well as a sufficient turning aisle.
