Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety measures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station should not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Never allow objects such as matches or lighters to be used when somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
