There are 2 kinds of forklifts, based mostly on whether or not they run on electricity or gas:

Internal Combustion Forklifts: The IC lift truck will run on fuels such as gas, liquid propane, diesel or compressed natural gas or CNG. Gas powered models are best suited for outdoor applications because they produce pollutants and gases that are harmful to employees and pedestrians. Models which run on gasoline are also great to be utilized in bad weather and in the rain. These units can lift weights about 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Due to the maintenance and fuel costs, units that run on gas are more costly to use than the electric units, although, they cost much less up front compared to electric powered units. Units which run on liquid propane are the right option for safe use in indoor applications.

Electric Lift Trucks: Electric forklifts take batteries that need regular charging. As these units do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these machines. They are the best alternative for warehouses and indoor applications. What's more, electric forklifts do not require any fuel storage units and they are a lot quieter to run compared to other units. Amongst the disadvantages of electric powered models is that they are unable to lift cargo more than 15,000 pounds and thus, have a slower acceleration than gasoline powered models.

The lift truck is particularly made to move objects and supplies easily and quickly. Accidents do happen regularly like is the case with nearly all kinds of machinery. There are some safety regulations which should be followed in order to keep everybody safe. The most important concern is recruiting a qualified operator, who would be able to show you a valid lift truck license.

On the market nowadays, there are numerous different kinds of forklifts available. Deciding which one is right for your specific requirements will be based on the types of loads which you need to transport, what kind of environment your equipment will have to operate in, for example, indoors or outdoors or both. Once you know your particular requirements, it would be easy to match up to the right type of forklift. When you know your needs exactly you would be able to make the right choice.

One more great way to get first hand experience on the various lift truck units is the try renting your forklift. This would also enable you to see all the possible choices available to you. This is a cheaper way to determine if the machine you have chosen can keep up with you on the job location.
